How to Dress for Your Body Type, Part 1: Athletic Build

Like Cam Newton, quarterback for the Carolina Panthers, many men with athletic builds have trouble selecting tailored clothing that is flattering for their body type.

Over the course of our long history of dressing American athletes (we are the Official Tailored Clothier of Major League Soccer, the Seattle Sounders, the Vancouver Whitecaps and the Portland Timbers), we have picked up a few tricks that just might help. Here are a few tips for dressing an athletic build:

1. Have a sales associate properly fit you for a suit, then stick to that size every time. Men with larger chests tend to buy sizes that are too large, which makes them look boxy.

2. Always wear a two-button jacket, which will elongate your torso and balance wider shoulders.

3. Remember that dress shirts should have some drape. Make sure the sleeves are not too tight around your biceps.

4. Have an expert tailor take in the excess fabric on both sides of the jacket to create a slim and lean silhouette.

5. Wear slim and narrow cut trousers, which will make you appear taller and slimmer.

  1. Thanks for the post. As a former soccer player as well as a high school football player i have this problem. Even the “athletic fit” suits i got long ago were not properly fit. Only now do i truly understand a proper fit and how it should look. The more research i do the more knowledge i gain. This is advice i’ve heard before but was not positive it was right for me (i’m sometimes not easily convinced). but seeing it again as well as many other places shows me i’m on the right track. Thanks for the post. i’ll follow it for my next suit purchase. By the way what’s up with the Chicago Fire? You’re a Chicago company, you cloth the Potus with the Mostus. The Fire should be on board with you too.

    • Thanks for the feedback, glad we could help- if you have heard of any other helpful tips for dressing athletic bodies, please let us know. We do dress a few MLS teams, like the New York Cosmos. Maybe we will dress the Chicago Fire one day! We’d be honored.
